A backyard pool is every homeowner’s dream. I mean, who doesn’t want a fun place where you can cool off, relax, and make memories simultaneously?
Although many benefits come with having a pool in your backyard, including tanned skin and year-round access, building a pool usually isn’t as straight-forward as we’d like to think it is. Homeowners usually underestimate the time, money, and effort it takes to go from initial design consultation to a backyard pool ready to swim in.
Initial Consultation and Permits
So, first things first—the initial consultation, which is a stage that most people don’t even think about. Although it takes 6–8 weeks to build a pool, that’s only accounting for construction time. You’ll be exploring your options when it comes to design, shape, and size with your pool designer. You’ll be working out the details, different features, selecting materials, after which you’ll be able to settle on a final design. Expect a lot of going back and forth before your design has been finalized. This process can take anywhere between 1–3 weeks, depending on the level of customization, complexity, and type of design that you want.
After the initial consultation, you’ll need to apply for a permit. This can take anywhere from a week to two months since it depends on your local municipality.
Construction
Once your design is finalized and permit approved, it’s time to get digging. Excavation takes about a week to complete, with heavy machinery in a frenzy all over your backyard. It also depends on other elements like weather, natural obstructions like boulders, and other factors.
After excavation has been completed, the next step is installing the steel frame, which will give your pool its structure. It takes around 1–3 days, after which pipes and plumbing need to be installed, which can take up to a week. After electrical equipment and pipes are in place, gunite is applied and may take up to a week to cure. After it’s been cured, decorative tiles, coping, and lining like marble or brick is installed, which may take up to 1–3 days. If you’re adding a deck, it may take a week or so, along with the final coating, features, and necessary cleanup. And voila! Your pool is done.
