Despite being a generally recommended thing, not enough people are using sunscreen in the United States. Billions of dollars are spent each year on the treatment of diseases related to the skin, with skin cancer being a leading cause for this ever-increasing expense.
Sunscreen has several benefits, and there’s no reason you should avoid it when you’re heading outside or becoming exposed to the rays of the sun. It shouldn’t be limited as a commodity used when heading to the beach, but something to use in our daily lives whenever we are leaving home.
Skin Cancer Prevention
According to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer is a lot more common than you might imagine, with around 3.3 million patients in the United States. Most of these are basal cell cancer patients, but there’s also the chance of squamous cell skin cancer and melanoma.
Out of the 3, melanoma is the most dangerous as it can spread to other parts of the body if not treated properly. Sunscreen prevents UV rays from harming your skin by creating a layer over it, effectively saving you from cancer.
Slows Premature Aging
Aging is an inevitable, biological process that can’t be stopped. But it can be slowed down by using sunscreen. The external environments contribute heavily to aging, which is often called extrinsic aging, with UV rays being a great contributor to this cause. When exposed to the sun too often, the skin becomes dull, dry and leathery.
Due to varying levels of melanin in the skin, sun exposure can cause discoloration in some parts of the body. It makes the exposed part of the skin’s tone look uneven. This phenomenon is known as hyperpigmentation. With enough sunscreen, you can prevent the UV rays from ruining the color of your skin.
