As lovely as owning a swimming pool sounds, it is not always easy to maintain it. Without a proper maintenance routine, your pool can succumb to a plethora of not-so-ideal problems, such as green water, algae build-up, and broken filters.
If you own a pool, then you should know that it must be constantly maintained so that you can continue enjoying clean and safe water. Here are some tips that you need to keep in mind as a pool owner.
Always Keep A Checklist
Pool maintenance is not a one-time job. It’s an ongoing process, which is why you should keep a checklist. You need to ensure that you’re taking proper care of your pool. Follow a regular pool maintenance checklist, i.e., daily, weekly
Make A Habit Of Scrubbing And Skimming
Skim off the leaves and debris from the surface of the water daily. Pool vacuums can provide easy and quick solutions in removing litter, leaves, and algae.
You should also scrub off the pool’s walls, steps, and base to avoid getting an infection and prevent algae build-up. Fill the floor with chlorine and allow it to remove any bacteria in the pool. Then scrub again.
Measure The Chemical Levels
Ensure that your pool water is clean by understanding the chemical levels. Test the chemicals at least once a week. Allowing the chemicals to seethe can turn your swimming pool into a hotbed for bacteria.
Clean The Pool Filter
The filter is responsible for removing impurities from the water. It can clean off the dirt, debris, leaves, and other particles that are floating around in your pool.
Having abnormal pool signs, including pool odor, clogged drain, and inefficient hose cleaner, means it is time for a filter system washdown. Utilizing the ‘backwash’ in the filter can help you clean the filter system. You should clean your filter once a week, and once a month, you should clean the pipes connected to the filter system.
Use Baking Soda
Pool chemicals can be very expensive to purchase. Baking Soda can be used as an alternative to sodium bicarbonate to control the alkalinity of the pool without drastically reducing the pH levels. Baking soda even has sodium bicarbonate on the ingredients sections and is cheaper than expensive pool chemicals.
Winterize The Pool Appropriately
It would be best to winterize the pool at the end of the swimming season. Clean the pool thoroughly and throw a winter chemical into the water. Run the filter and then lower the water level. Do not drain the water completely, as icy conditions can damage the pool by hydrostatic pressure. Use pool anti-freeze to the plumbing and then cover the pool with a winter cover.
