In a world of tablets, smartphones, and gaming consoles, there’s a lot for children to learn but a lot of old school charm that children are missing out on these days.
For example, playing outside in the backyard and soaking in some vitamin D are some of the most essential ways for children to be physically active and stay healthy.
Not only does it help them get plenty of exercise and tire them out right before it’s time to sleep, but it’s also a great way for them to learn new things, work on getting new hobbies such as gardening, and spend quality time each other as a family as well.
Here are some ways you can help your children find fun in more educational outdoor activities this season!
Lead by example
Children tend to emulate the behaviors they see most often. So if you and your spouse are always on the phone and don’t get out much, chances are your children will learn to do the same. Make it a point to spend family time together and to do it outside!

Assign chores to be completed outdoors
Make sure your children have the habit of completing chores both inside and outside the home. This can be anything from raking the yard, pulling weeds, taking the dog for a walk or washing it. Not only does it divide the number of tasks equally, it makes them responsible, teaches them valuable life skills and lets them spend some time getting comfortable in the outdoor space.
Don’t make it too much about cleaning up
Even though it’s important to let children know that they have the responsibility to clean up after themselves, accept the fact that making a mess is part of the learning process. If you want them to explore the outdoor space and spend more time there, you’re going to have to bump up your tolerance for messy play.
Water sports for warmer months
No matter what season it is, playing in water is the most fun for children of all ages. The best way to make sure they get some much needed exercise, is to get a pool so that kids can learn how to swim. This is great for cognitive development as well because it activates sensory and motion detectors in the brain.
