It takes more than good swimming skills to receive a swimming scholarship. Colleges have a diverse pool of athletes to choose from. You can, however, gain leverage over other athletes through the following ways:
Go Ahead and Contact the Swimming Coach
Writing for Forbes, Karen Weaver points out that college coaches are already exhausted themselves since the pandemic. They’ve been working tirelessly to recruit athletes for a very long time. At this point, nothing could be more encouraging than interested swimmers reaching out to the coach or the staff to learn more about swimming scholarships at the collegiate level.
Know the Academic Requirements to Apply for College-Level Swimming Scholarships
Different colleges across states have different academic cadres to approve scholarship applicants. To receive Virginia’s women swimming scholarships, look up colleges that offer the program. Please note that all swimming scholarships will not be full scholarships. Swimming is an equivalency in most colleges in Virginia. Most colleges have a Natatorium or Aquatics club specially dedicated to swimming practices. These pools have been constructed by expert pool contractors in Hamilton and other areas for athletic championships.

Learn About NCAA’s Recruitment Guidelines
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has guidelines for recruiting student athletes to their swimming programs. The association sends swimming coaches to schools and colleges to evaluate student-athletes.
National Letter of Intent
After a rigorous evaluation process, the college-bound student signs a Letter of Intent. The student agrees to the various clauses set by the NCAA. This also includes attending a Division I or II college for one academic year. Both Division I and II are funded scholarship competition levels that some participant colleges offer scholarships for.
Each division level offers different scholarship options. Visit the websites of different schools and colleges to get to know more about their requirement. According to official data, there are around 9.9 scholarships per team for around 3000 athletes that are recruited in the NCAA DI. The number of total athletes in DII is lesser; around 1000 athletes in the Division. Student athletes can apply for financial aid and need-based aid on top of their athletic scholarships. This rule allows colleges to extend more funds to families struggling to pay tuition fees.
Scholarships Don’t Apply to D III
You’re only eligible for scholarships in the DI and DII divisions. However, your SAT/ACT grades will be equally effective during the DIII recruitment process.
The NAIA Scholarships
The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics has similar criteria for recruitment in the DI and DII. The educational requirements for NAIA scholarships are more flexible in some colleges.
