The steps on your swimming pool may crack over time. They don’t frequently occur. But when they do, they significantly decrease your pool’s curb appeal.
Repairing these cracks is very simple, and you can do it yourself. In this blog, we discuss how you can do that.
Materials You Need
- Putty knife or a scraper
- Sandpaper (100-grit)
- Towel
- Dust Mask
- Fiberglass kit
- Rotary Stone
- Epoxy pigment colors (matching with your pool’s floor)
- Paintbrush
Step 1: Remove the Water from the Pool
Drain your pool to the lowest level so that your pool’s steps are no longer submerged. Don’t drain the entire pool until there’s a crack in the pool’s lining. It will save you gallons of water.
Step 2: Find the Crack
Once you identify the crack, use a removable marker to circle the crack so that its more comfortable for you to work with it.
Step 3: Prepare the Area
Thoroughly dry the cracked area with a towel. Use a scraper to remove any debris. Now use a rotary stone and grind the broken area of the pool step. Using 100-grit sandpaper, sand the fiberglass until its surface is dull, and the crack is smooth. Wipe off the dust and finish the process.
Step 4: Use Fiberglass Repair Kit
The usage direction varies depending on different kits. The fiberglass kits come with an instruction manual. Follow the instructions. Try getting a kit that has a mesh patch. It ensures a strong repair.
Step 5: Sand It
Once the fiberglass kit has dried, its time to use a sandpaper to smoothen it. 100-grit sandpaper would work fine. Keep sanding until the surface is smooth to touch. While doing this, we recommend that you cover your face to avoid breathing in the dust.
Step 6: Reapply the Paint
Wipe the area with a dry towel to remove any left moisture and dust. Define the painting area with masking tape. By using a paintbrush or a roller, evenly apply a coat of epoxy paint. Let the first coat dry for 8 hours. Then apply another layer of paint to get the perfect finish. Let the paint dry completely before re-filling the pool. Once the pool is re-filled, balance the water’s pH to around 7.4, and you’re done.
