Backyard pools are a great place for some summer fun. But as you lounge around in your pool, your furry friends may also want to partake.
And while it’s okay if you’re there to supervise, that isn’t possible 24/7. That’s why we’ve drawn up a guide to help you navigate pool safety for your pets.
Erect a pool fence
A pool fence can prevent your pets from entering the pool. If you have a small dog or a kitten, use plastic or glass to cover the lower portion of the fence. This will cover any gaps and will ensure that your pet cant squeeze through and get into the pool.
Be on the lookout for any holes or spaces that may enable your pet to gain access to the pool. Cover them up immediately to prevent any accidents.
Keep all the chairs and tables away
Keep any chairs and tables at a considerable distance from the pool. Pets can use furniture as launch pads and can end up diving into the pool.
Placing them at a safe distance will save your pets from potential injuries and keep them safe.
Don’t assume that your pet can swim
Some dog breeds are natural swimmers. However, it’s best not to assume that all of them are. First, contact your veterinarian and consult them to establish if swimming is safe for your pet.
If it is, you’ll need to teach your pet how to swim. Familiarize them with the pool and the water, so they don’t get taken by surprise.
Familiarize pets with the pool
In the unfortunate case that your pet slips into the pool; they need a safe way out. They may know how to swim, but if they can’t get out, your pets will be left waiting for you to save them.
You will also require accessible exits. Build a ramp or steps to enable pets to exit the pool. These will ensure your pet’s safety in case you’re not around; they won’t get exhausted trying to get out.
Modifying your pool can adequately safeguard you and your pets from such unfortunate incidents.
Maintain the pool
When your furry friends do take a dip in the pool, you will require a variety of chemicals to ensure cleanliness and hygiene. While chlorine is safe for most animals, other chemicals that are required to maintain proper pH may not be.
Consult your vet to confirm to keep both you and your animals safe. Make sure the chemicals are properly stored and out of reach of children or pets.
